METHODOLOGY AND VISION
The world responds to media and its messages, but the public does not generally like to be preached at; the public likes to be entertained, and the goal of this film is to be seen in order to be able to covey its message.
This film will be crafted as both a direct “conscious” message and will be also directed to the unconscious using “subliminal” means. Thus we have chosen to wrap our “direct” message in a story, vibrant with adventure and drama, so as to be “spectator friendly.” (i.e. “Gladiator” with a strong underlying message.)
The subliminal message we are putting forth is: The three faiths have lived together worshipped together and do so to this day at the Monastery of St Catherine – peace can exist, it has before – SEE it (what the eye sees, the brain registers as a reality). This message is told through the simple, basic, humanity that links the characters.
Developing the story
The story must have the three religions represented by three main characters, which are all equally intense, equally present – and whose negatives are equal to their positives in as far as their character and cultural traits, thus not one is
favored. These characters (Sofia, Amir, Rebecca) each represents the essence of their culture and faith.
To achieve this goal, each stage, each step of the story development is taken very carefully on the religious front, the historical front, and the story telling front. The one area where a little artistic license has been taken is on the
geographic level.
The subliminal part of the message must be very well crafted. Examples (NOT researched): in many scenes, while the main characters interact, the audience will see in the backdrop various subliminal elements such as a Jew and an Arab collaborating in a blacksmith store, a Christian and an Arab playing chess; a Hand of Fatima on the wall next to a cross… and more in the same vein. To keep the cultural and the religious content at par, each step of the story development has been collaborated on by Dr Zabbal and the Director of the Institut du monde Arabe in Paris to monitor the Muslim content, Sandro di Castro in Rome, to ensure the depiction of the Jewish faith, and Monsignor Giulio Dellavite, who will, at a later date, appoint a knowledgeable person to oversee the Christian aspect. We will also rely on the Russian Orthodox Church to help with the documentation they have on the Monastery of St Catherine.
Kyra Pahlen has already successfully tackled a similar subject by writing the first literary fiction on the life of Buddha where the intention was to portray the man in a manner that made him accessible to the public, and won an Award from the United Nations for “bringing Buddha to the people.”
In addition, the project is supported by organizations and individuals such as Reset, an Italian magazine edited by Giancarlo Bosetti, and Nina zu Furstenberg. Reset is involved with ResetDoc, which is an international non profit organization based in Rome, linking an international network of personalities involved in cultural issues, of mainly philosophical
background. ResetDoc was created to encourage dialogue and comprehension amongst different cultural areas and worlds. Part of this work is the www.resetdoc.org online magazine, which operates in Italian, English and Arab language.
